En ny internationell studie ledd av King’s College London varnar för att en ytterligare global uppvärmning på bara 0,5°C kan tredubbla den landyta där extrem värme blir dödlig för människor. Vid 2°C över förindustriella nivåer kommer 6 % av jordens landmassa att överskrida gränsen för vad friska unga vuxna klarar av, en yta motsvarande USA:s storlek124. För personer över 60 år ökar riskområdet till 35 % av landmassan46.
Värmeöverskridande gränser
Studien definierar två kritiska trösklar:
- Okompenserbar värme: Kroppen kan inte reglera kärntemperaturen genom svettning (wet-bulb 35°C)14.
- Oöverlevbar värme: Kärntemperaturen når 42°C inom 6 timmar, vilket leder till värmeslag och organfailure47.
Åldersrelaterade risker
- Mellan 1994-2023 överskred 2 % av landytan gränsen för unga vuxna, men 20 % för äldre47.
- Vid 2°C uppvärmning blir värmeextremer vanligare i områden som Sahariska Afrika, Sydasien och Mellanöstern256.
Framtidsprognoser
- Vid 4-5°C uppvärmning skulle 60 % av landytan bli farlig för äldre, och subtropiska regioner bli oöverlevbara även för yngre15.
